Concerning the Nursery in 2022:
We greatly value children and families at Grace Community Church, and we want to do everything within our power to encourage families worshipping together within our larger church family whenever possible. Some time ago, we were made aware that the nursery (both workers and children) were feeling a bit isolated from participation in the Lord's Supper—though we served them the elements (bread & cup) during that portion of the service, they missed some of the spirit of communion that is experienced within the larger church body. We value our nursery workers and desire for our church to experience unity in the Table, so this was a significant concern.
After working through several possible options and hearing input from those involved (along with extended input from our leadership team), we began weighing the possibility of keeping the nursery (both workers and children) in the main worship service on Lord's Supper Sundays, dismissing them to the nursery after the Supper (along with Graceland, who already followed those guidelines). In an effort to engage any questions or concerns, we distributed a survey on three consecutive Sundays to gauge the church's input on this change, and we received a great deal of positive affirmation in this regard.
We will therefore move forward in January 2022 by keeping our whole church body together for the Lord's Supper portion of those services (observed every third Sunday), with both the Nursery and Graceland dismissing immediately preceding the sermon on those days. We hope this will encourage our nursery workers as well as allow our young ones to observe an important ordinance of our church! We pray that this will promote a sense of unity within our church, that it will serve all our members well, and that we will glorify God in what we do at GCC.
